CRAIG E. EVANS

President and CEO, and Founder

Mr. Evans is the President and CEO, and a founder of ESS Inc. Having started ESS from his garage in 2011, he led the company to the commercialization of the Iron Flow Battery system in 2016. Prior to ESS, Mr. Evans was the Director of Design & Product Development at ClearEdge Power Inc. His team designed the ClearEdge5, a 5kW combine-heat-and-power fuel cell system, which was successfully commercialized in 2010. This product received both CSA International certification in North America and KNREC certification in Asia. Mr. Evans began his career at United Technologies Corporation (UTC) where he held technical leadership positions in their Fuel Cell business and, prior to that, as a project engineer in the Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine business. In 2006, Mr. Evans was awarded the distinguished George Mead Award, the highest honor for individual engineering achievement at UTC.

Mr. Evans has authored over 15 patents and patent applications. He holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University, a MS in Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a M.B.A from Carnegie Mellon University.

DR. JULIA SONG

Chief Technology Officer & Founder

Dr. Song, a co-founder of ESS, formally joined ESS in April of 2012 as the Chief Technology Officer. In this position, she has spearheaded the transition of the Iron Flow Battery technology to becoming a commercial energy storage system. Prior to joining ESS, Dr. Song was the Vice President of Research and Development at ClearEdge Power Inc., where she led over 20 cross-functional scientists and engineers on all corporate R&D projects and the commercialization of the 5kW Combined Heat and Power Fuel Cell system. Dr. Song started her career at Milliken & Co. as an Industrial Research Chemist.

Dr. Song has authored approximately 20 peer-reviewed publications and over 10 patents and patent applications. Dr. Song holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She specializes in fuel cells, batteries, electrochemistry and the catalysis properties of nanoparticles.

WILLIAM R. SPROULL

VP BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & SALES

Mr. Sproull is responsible for business development, sales and go-to-market strategies for ESS. Having held executive roles and founded startups in both high tech and emerging clean energy spaces for the last 20 years, Bill’s passion centers on bringing new technologies to markets where gaps exist.

Prior to joining ESS, he was Managing Director for Strategic Energy Advisors, a project development firm focused on solar, storage and energy efficient lighting for commercial facilities. Mr. Sproull was a founder and business development executive at ClearEdge Power, building it to become a leader in the stationary fuel cell space. Prior to entering the clean energy industry in 2003, Mr. Sproull was an executive at Planar Systems, Inc., in charge of the $65M Industrial Business Unit for custom display solutions, and started his career at Honeywell Inc., serving various
roles in sales, marketing, finance and business unit management in its Aerospace Group.

Mr. Sproull is a graduate from the University of Colorado, with a BS degree in Finance.

MARK HAGEDORN

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Mr. Hagedorn joined ESS in March of 2016 as the Director of Operations. In this position, he is responsible for the transition from low volume, highly configurable manufacturing, to high volume manufacturing of ESS’ commercial energy storage systems. Prior to joining ESS, Mr. Hagedorn was a leader in the Operations Team at FEI Company, where he was involved in all aspects of the manufacturing and product development of electron microscopy capital equipment. Prior to that, he was in leadership positions at Detroit Diesel Corp., with the Product Validation and Reliability Growth divisions, along with Pankl Racing Systems in manufacturing and design roles.

Mr. Hagedorn has authored over 10 patent and patent applications. He holds a BS in Vehicle Design from the Vehicle Research Institute at Western Washington University, as well as a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington.

ANDREW HAUGHIAN

Mr. Haughian is a Partner in Pangaea Ventures Ltd. He has over 15 years of energy and industrial experience. Andrew began his career in the upstream oil and gas industry before transitioning into engineering risk management consulting. He has a deep understanding of advanced materials commercialization and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal, Translational Materials Research. Andrew serves on the board of CarbonCure Technologies, Energy Storage Systems Inc. and Tivra Corporation. He previously served on the boards of RSI Inc. and Boulder Ionics, which were sold in 2014. Mr. Haughian holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Business Administration degree from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.

NEVIN CALDWELL

Mr. Caldwell is currently the Chief Operating Officer at Flanders Corporation. Nevin most recently served as Vice President of Operations for the Americas of Exide Technologies, a global leader in manufacturing and recycling of lead acid batteries and charger systems. Nevin was employed with Duracell Batteries for nineteen years, serving in many different roles within the organization but lastly as Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Technical Operations. Nevin is accustomed to working with private equity firms and has served as President and Chief Operating Officer for two different portfolio companies. Nevin brings a wealth of diverse global experiences from both private equity and public manufacturing companies. Nevin is a graduate of The University of Tennessee (Chattanooga) and holds a MS in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He also holds a BA in Chemistry from The University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill).

MICHAEL R. NIGGLI

Mr. Michael R. Niggli joins the ESS board with a wealth of utility industry management experience. He most recently served as President and Chief Operating Officer at San Diego Gas & Electric Co. (SDG&E) until December 2013 and currently serves on the boards of several energy-related companies. Since beginning his career at SDG&E in 1971, Mr Niggli held many positions within the electricity and gas operations, fuels acquisition, project management and customer service operations of SDG&E. Prior to rejoining SDG&E in 2006, Mr. Niggli served in positions with Entergy Corp., Nevada Power Company, Sierra Pacific Resources and Sempra Energy.

Mr. Niggli has been closely involved in business and education partnerships in San Diego, New Orleans and Las Vegas. He served as Chairman of Sierra Pacific Power Company and Nevada Power Co. since July 1999. He served as a Director of San Diego Gas & Electric Company since December 7, 2012; Member of the Board of Directors of Esval S.A. since March 2015 and ESSBIO S.A. since March 2015. Mr. Niggli served as a Director of San Diego Gas & Electric Company and Southern California Gas Co. since February 23, 2007. He served as a Director of Pacific Enterprises Inc. from February 23, 2007 to April 3, 2010. He also has served on the boards of the Central Arkansas Radiation Institute, United Way of Southern Nevada, Great Basin National Park Foundation, UNLV Foundation, Electric Power Research Institute, Edison Electric Institute and the Nevada Development Authority. Mr. Niggli has authored at least a dozen articles on issues pertinent to the electric, gas and telecommunications industries. He has provided expert testimony on electric and gas utility matters before numerous legislative committees, public service commissions and city councils at the federal, state, and local levels. He founded the graduate program in power engineering at San Diego State University and lectured part-time for five years. Mr. Niggli holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University in Long Beach and a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University. Mr. Niggli participated in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

DAVID LAZOVSKY

Mr. Lazovsky is the founder of Intermolecular (NASDAQ: IMI) and served as the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors from September 2004 to October 2014. As President and CEO, Lazovsky led all aspects of the business through its lifecycle from early stage start-up to a high-growth public company. Prior to founding Intermolecular, Lazovsky held several senior management positions at Applied Materials. From 1996 through August 2004, he held management positions in the Metal Deposition and Thin Films Product Business Group where he was responsible for managing more than $1 billion in Applied Materials’ semiconductor manufacturing equipment business. Lazovsky holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Ohio University, and holds 45 issued U.S. patents. He also currently serves on the board of directors of POET Technologies, a provider of optoelectronics solutions for the data communications and optical sensors markets.

ESS is fortunate to have made significant progress in commercializing the All-Iron Flow Battery technology on founder’s capital and grants from ARPA-E and Oregon-based business accelerator organizations. In 2015, ESS closed its first equity round, which was led by Pangaea Ventures Ltd., of Vancouver, BC. As ESS accelerates the commercial ramp of the Iron Flow Battery systems, additional strategic investors may be welcomed to help the company address its growth plans in a rapidly accelerating market for long duration energy storage.
